Tech Tips
Final Drives... That Big Forgotten Gear Box
Final drives, that big forgotten gear box that keeps your combine on its wheels. We tend to forget about it because it's hidden behind that big round black thing called a tire. Seriously, it's easy to keep up with. Drive your combine slowly and listen for any unusual noises such as clicks or grinding sounds. It helps to have an assistant to listen also - especially on the right hand side since it's further away from the cab door. Checking and changing the oil regularly is of the utmost importance. Any filings or glitter is sure signs of trouble; and thinking "I'll get by" won't work. Clicking sounds are a sign of a broken tooth and there is no extra room for pieces inside the housing. It is a very "sinking" feeling when the wheel falls off and your machine leans to one side. On the John Deere 9000 series, make sure to grease the outside bearing with a grease gun. The grease fitting is very hard to see and a lot of people don't know it's there. We hear that just about every time a new one is purchased. Remember, we offer great quality inspected used as well as fully rebuilt parts for all makes and models.
